Minor update lands on Xperia Z, ZR and Tablet Z LTE variants (10.7.A.0.228)

Xperia Z_10.7.A.0.228_1A small firmware update has begun to roll out for the Sony Xperia Z, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z. The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop firmware update has build number 10.7.A.0.228 (versus 10.7.A.0.222 currently) and strangely leaves the handset exposed to the Stagefright exploit. Few other key changes have been noted.

The update is currently live in single regions for the LTE variants of the Xperia Z (C6603), Xperia ZR (C5503) and Xperia Tablet Z (SGP321). We would expect the rollout to widen to other regions shortly. As usual, FTF firmware download links are included below. If you updated, feel free to chime in with your impressions below.

Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow released for Sony Concept_2Sony Mobile has released the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact handsets running the Concept for Android beta trial. Build number MMB29M.Z1.3021-somc moves the Android version to MR1 (Maintenance Release 1). The only change we are aware of (apart from the update to Android 6.0.1) is that Sony has now removed the Icon pack found within the Home settings. The “Icon appearance” is still there, but Sony has removed the three options that it included previously. This latest update should be rolling to all Sony Concept for Android Marshmallow owners via OTA right now.

Sony extends Marshmallow Concept trial into New Year

Sony Concept for AndroidGood news for those running the Sony Concept for Android Marshmallow beta – the testing was formally due to conclude at the end of this week, but Sony Mobile has now decided to extend the programme until after the Christmas and New Year break.

In a post in the Google+ community, the developers point to the trial “going in a good way and think it would be a pity to end it already. ” Obviously, there will be less activity over the Christmas break, but the Concept initiative will continue into the new year.

The Sony developers say that they “do not know when we will stop this concept right now” and that they do not know about the official Android 6.0 Marshmallow time plans. Regardless, this is brilliant news. Anyone using the Concept software will be well aware it has been an amazing software experience.

Thanks Timo!

Sony MMB29M.Z1.3027_3Sony Mobile has updated the Concept for Android Marshmallow firmware to build number MMB29M.Z1.3027-somc. The update fixes a number of bugs for those that had problems with the previous ‘3021’ update. Sony had to halt the previous update after people reported issues with the new Android 6.0.1 firmware.

The new MMB29M.Z1.3027 update is being rolled in batches and introduces a new Clock widget along with a number of bug fixes (startup problems when Google app is disabled is now fixed along with volume expand arrows).

Android 6.0 firmware certified for Japanese Xperia Z4 and Z5 models

Android 6.0 MarshmallowIn a sign that the official Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware update may soon be landing on Sony Xperia devices, the update was recently certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance for a number of Japanese models.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow was Wi-Fi Certified for the Sony Xperia Z5 on NTT docomo (SO-01H), SoftBank (501SO) and au (SOV32) as well as the NTT docomo Xperia Z5 Premium (SO-03H). The latest Android version was also certified for the Xperia Z4 on NTT docomo (SO-03G), SoftBank (402SO) and au (SOV31).

It is worth pointing out that this certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance is not the same as the PTCRB, so do not assume that the new Android 6.0 firmware is a matter of two to three weeks away. Sony Mobile has so far kept quiet about official release dates for Marshmallow, but we expect some firm news shortly after the New Year.

Xperia Z3 Plus_28.0.A.8.272Sony Mobile plans to move the Xperia Z3+ and Xperia Z4 Tablet straight from Android 5.0.2 Lollipop to Android 6.0 Marshmallow at some point soon. A new firmware update has been certified by the PTCRB with build number 28.0.A.8.272. Unfortunately, this is no Marshmallow certification though as it is a small bump over the existing firmware (28.0.A.8.266). We’re not sure why Sony is shortly looking to push this maintenance update, we hope it does not mean that the Android 6.0 update will take some more time before it arrives. We’ll let you know once this ‘272’ update starts to roll.

Xperia Z3 Plus 28.0.A.8.272_2A small firmware update with build number 28.0.A.8.272 is now rolling for the Xperia Z3+ and Z3+ Dual. The update moves the handset from build number 28.0.A.8.266 and keeps the handset on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. This very well could be the last update before we see Android 6.0 Marshmallow hitting the handset directly, although Sony has not confirmed the timeline for this yet. We will keep you posted on further developments. In the meantime, you can download the FTF firmware files for both variants below.

Xperia C4_27.2.A.0.155The Sony Xperia C4 and C4 Dual were expected to move straight from Android 5.0 Lollipop to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, skipping Android 5.1 in the process. However, out of the blue, Sony has pushed the Android 5.1 Lollipop update to the handset in the form of build number 27.2.A.0.155 for the Xperia C4 and build number 27.2.B.0.155 for the C4 Dual.

This latest update is currently live across five of the six Xperia C4/C4 Dual variants (E5343 excluded for now), with a number of users receiving notifications via OTA. Sony’s support pages haven’t been updated for this new update, so we don’t have a full changelog. We will include FTF firmware links below in due course, in the meantime feel free to chime in with your impressions.

Has the Xperia Marshmallow update been delayed? Telstra says it is

Android 6.0 MarshmallowSony Mobile has been careful not to overpromise on when the Android 6.0 Marshmallow will officially start to roll on Xperia handsets. Apart from the successful Concept for Android program, which has been successfully rolling the latest versions of Android 6.0 to Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact participants, news on the official Marshmallow rollout has been quiet.

Sony has still not released any expected ETA, but last October Australian carrier Telstra indicated that a January 2016 launch looked likely. Now the same carrier has updated its software update page to confirm that Marshmallow for the Xperia Z4 Tablet “has been delayed” and they are currently waiting on Sony “to revise submission date”. Given the lack of official information right now, this is the best we can go on, but we’re still hopeful that the update will start to roll in the coming weeks.

Xperia Marshmallow Concept users don’t want the trial to end

Sony Concept for AndroidSony developers sent out a survey to all of those running the Concept for Android Marshmallow on Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact handsets late last year, asking how happy were they with the beta and how long they wanted it to go on for. The results were recently released, which you can see below, and it’s quite clear that the Concept programme has received a positive reception with the majority wanting it to go on for as long as possible.

We have reported previously how well the programme has been received, with a responsive developer team, regular updates and a firmware that is both stable, fast and power efficient. We’re yet to see if/how some of this good work translates into the official Android 6.0 firmware for Xperia devices, but hopefully we don’t have to wait too long to find out.

Xperia M is first Sony device to receive official CyanogenMod 13 Nightlies

$

Xperia M CM13The Xperia M (C1904, C1905) has become the first Sony handset to receive official CyanogenMod 13.0 nightly builds. This milestone is primarily down to the hard work of developer PecanCM (Ron Gokhale) over at XDA, who had been working on an unofficial CM13 beta since November 2015.

This means that Xperia M owners can now move to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow through these official nightlies. The update is reasonably stable with most features working. If you are an Xperia M owner and want to give this a try, you will need to make sure you are running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean firmware and have an unlocked bootloader with a recovery installed (either CWM or TWRP).

If you are an Xperia M Dual owner, then unfortunately you won’t be getting official nightlies due to a known data bug that affects the second SIM. However, there are patches available to help enjoy this latest update (see the XDA source link below).

Xperia M4 Aqua to skip Android 5.1 firmware; small update rolls in Nordics

$

Xperia M4 AquaWith a number of handsets receiving the Android 5.1 Lollipop firmware update that weren’t expected to, we’ve had many Xperia M4 Aqua owners ask whether the same will happen for them. Well according to Sony’s official twitter channel, the M4 Aqua will not receive Android 5.1 and instead skip straight to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, as was originally envisaged.

While we wait for Marshmallow, Sony Mobile has updated the Android 5.0 firmware of the Xperia M4 Aqua (E2303) and M4 Aqua Dual (E2333) in the Nordic region. This upgrades the build numbers to 26.1.A.3.92 for E2303 and 26.1.B.3.91 for E2333. We haven’t seen the firmware appear for other Xperia M4 Aqua variants, so this might only be region specific. FTF firmware files are available below if you would like to give the new update a try.

Japanes Xperia Marshmallow_ThumbJapanese operator has announced which Sony Xperia devices it expects to update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. As you probably would expect, the update list includes all of the recent Xperia flagships including the Z3, Z4 (including tablet) and Z5 ranges. However, one big omission is the Xperia Z2 that has been left off the list – a big shame considering the near identical hardware versus the Xperia Z3. No timeline has been given on the release but a few official screenshots have made an appearance, which you will find below.

Sony launches “Xperia Beta Program” for official Marshmallow release

Xperia Beta Program_1Sony Mobile must be closer to releasing the official Android 6.0 Marshmallow as it has released an “Xperia Beta Program” to iron out any bugs before it is launched to the public. This beta program is not to be confused with the ‘Concept for Android’ program which remains a separate branch of software.

The Marshmallow being tested here is a pre-release version of the official Sony software that will shortly be publicly hit handsets. It is live for the Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact across only a few regions (Italy, Spain and Netherlands only).

This is how Sony describes it in a Google+ post in the Sony Concept community:

Xperia Beta Program – Quality beta test of official software
Concept for Android – Experimental consumer driven software

If you are a Concept user and wondering when the next update is coming, the team has said that hopefully a new release should be expected within a couple of weeks.

Sony UK says Xperia Marshmallow will roll from 7 March

Android Marshmallow DroidWe don’t normally like to quote what Sony reps are saying about software timings on social media, but right now we have very little to go on with regards to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update for Sony Xperia devices. In the past, Sony Mobile has given some ballpark of when we can expect to see big new firmware roll, but the company has been very quiet this time around.

Anyway, according to the Sony Mobile UK Twitter feed, the update will be released from 7 March 2016 for the Xperia Z5, Z4 Tablet and Z3+. The date seems too specific to be made up, but Sony’s social media teams have been wrong in the past – so tread carefully. We’ll bring you any official news as soon as we have it.
